Peninnah worked relentlessly on the church. So long she had spent without duties that she worked feverishly. She worked the gardens in the day and the church itself at night. Working the stone had started with the paths that lay in the church yard and the great wall surrounding it. Peninnah worked the stone smooth, brilliant as the day it was first laid in the ground. The task exhausted her quickly at first but the more she worked the more strength she regained.

Despite the pain she now walked faster and moved more freely as she tended the gardens. She could not do with the plants as she had with the stone. Still she had plenty of knowledge about the care of plants. The ivies and flowers so traditional to a church's grounds. The one thing she could not do was mow the grass.

It had taken her over a day to discover a means of accomplishing that task. It was when she discovered the few dollars in the offering box that she knew how to attend to the issue. It was not a sin to take from the offerings provided it was used for God’s works. Maintaining His house was surely within those bounds. There had been a man outside the wall playing his guitar for the few pennies people would give. She had seen his type before and approached him with an offer for the job she needed completed. He graciously accepted.

Peninnah had tended to renovating the altar area while he had mowed the grass. The task was now complete and he returned to his music. Peninnah stood in the newly trimmed grass feeling the coolness on her feet and looking over the progress critically. She had made much in the two days since it had become her charge. Birds filled the trees with song, the flowers were blooming and the ivy looked healthy. It was the church though that was just beginning to shine.

She did not choose the way it looked. It was the church itself that guided her hands when she worked to restore it. The church wished to return to the state it was in when the last stone was placed and the stone work finished. She had only attended to the very top of the steeple. The slate tiles shone in the sun now as if freshly cut. The sight made her smile and she could hardly wait to see the church back to its original splendor.

Her eyes left the church turned to the yard. It had received most of her attention. Slowly she walked through it thinking of Kaycee and how grateful she was to have found her. Peninnah knew it had been His plan for things to come as they had. For that she too was grateful. The world no longer seemed as bleak and for the first time in almost a generation she felt hopeful again. Deep in her heart she worried for the previous guardian and promised to pray for his safety each evening.

As she walked her mind turned to friends and she wondered how to contact Corwin as she promised she would. Also she vowed to go forth the next day and tell Annamarie of her new residence or perhaps if Kaycee returned before the afternoon she could help her write one. She had yet to see any visitors but she assumed that would change once the sanctuary had been properly attended to. For now she was happy to walk alone and enjoy her handiwork.
